Performance Analysis of Surface Mounted Permanent Magnet Brushless DC Motor using different Finite Element Packages

Abstract --- This paper presents the performance analysis of a 70 W, 350 rpm, 6 poles, and 18 slot radial flux Surface mounted permanent magnet brushless dc motor using three different finite element packages namely; MagNet, Maxwell and Ansys. The analysis includes the determination of different motor parameters namely; cogging torque, excitation torque, torque ripple, inductance profile and flux density at various motor parts along with harmonic analysis. Analytically, the developed torque for this motor is 1.91 Nm and it appears to be 2.35 Nm, 2.14 Nm, 1.88 Nm and 2.36 Nm as evaluated through FE packages namely; MagNet, Ansys virtual work, Ansys maxwell stress tensor and Maxwell respectively. The flux density profile is constant in permanent magnet and rotor core whereas almost sinusoidal in airgap, stator core and stator tooth. The torque harmonic analysis carried out in this work indicates third and fifth order harmonics are predominant. Effect of reluctance torque on the harmonics is also discussed in this paper. The work also includes comparative analysis of surface mounted PM BLDC motors having different permanent magnet constructions. Their selection guidelines for better performance are also discussed in detail in this paper.

A new method has introduced in my Project-work leads to the performance enhancement of PM BLDC motors.
The method details are confidential. But the results can be shared:

A drastic reduction of 26% in Torque-ripple has been found due to introduction of this method, accompanied by 55% reduction in absolute cogging-torque ripple.

The results are verified through FE Software.

On Wednesday evening, February 20th, the full Moon over the Americas will turn a delightful shade of red and possibly turquoise, too. It's a total lunar eclipse—the last one until Dec. 2010.

The Sun goes down. The Moon comes up. You go out and look at the sky. Observing the eclipse is that easy. Maximum eclipse, and maximum beauty, occurs at 10:26 pm EST (7:26 pm PST).

A lunar eclipse happens when the Moon passes through the shadow of Earth. You might expect the Moon to grow even more ashen than usual, but in fact it transforms into an orb of vivid red.

Why red? That is the color of Earth's shadow.

Consider the following: Most shadows we're familiar with are black or gray; step outside on a sunny day and look at your own. Earth's shadow is different because, unlike you, Earth has an atmosphere. The delicate layer of dusty air surrounding our planet reddens and redirects the light of the sun, filling the dark behind Earth with a sunset-red glow. The exact tint--anything from bright orange to blood red is possible--depends on the unpredictable state of the atmosphere at the time of the eclipse. "Only the shadow knows," says astronomer Jack Horkheimer of the Miami Space Transit Planetarium.

Transiting the shadow's core takes about an hour. The first hints of red appear around 10 pm EST (7 pm PST), heralding a profusion of coppery hues that roll across the Moon's surface enveloping every crater, mountain and moon rock, only to fade away again after 11 pm EST (8 pm PST). No special filter or telescope is required to see this spectacular event. It is a bright and leisurely display visible from cities and countryside alike.

hile you're watching, be alert for another color: turquoise. Observers of several recent lunar eclipses have reported a flash of turquoise bracketing the red of totality.

"The blue and turquoise shades at the edge of Earth's shadow were incredible," recalls amateur astronomer Eva Seidenfaden of Trier, Germany, who took the picture at right during the European lunar eclipse of March 3-4, 2007. Dozens of other photographers have documented the same phenomenon.

The source of the turquoise is ozone. Eclipse researcher Dr. Richard Keen of the University of Colorado explains: "During a lunar eclipse, most of the light illuminating the moon passes through the stratosphere where it is reddened by scattering. However, light passing through the upper stratosphere penetrates the ozone layer, which absorbs red light and actually makes the passing light ray bluer." This can be seen, he says, as a soft blue fringe around the red core of Earth's shadow.

To catch the turquoise on Feb. 20th, he advises, "look during the first and last minutes of totality." That would be around 10:01 pm EST and 10:51 pm EST (7:01 and 7:51 pm PST).

Blood red, bright orange, gentle turquoise: it's all good. Mark your calendar in vivid color for the Feb. 20th lunar eclipse.

History of Valentine Day

Valentine's Day celebration dates back to the ancient times when the 'Feast of Lupercal' was celebrated in the honour of the Roman God of Fertility. This day falls on the 15th of February every year. According to a time worn custom, on the eve of Lupercalia (14th of Feb) a ritual of 'name drawing' was followed, during which a young man drew the name of a girl from the lot, who was to be his sweetheart for the whole year. Romance, has, of course always made the world go round but we must say that these Romans knew how to make it official. Since then, this day (14th of Feb) has been considered as the day of Cupid, the mischievous son of Venus -the Roman Goddess of Love. Lovers through the ages have taken this day as their own - a day to celebrate the finest human emotion. The reason for celebration is ageless, but it was much later that a great lover gave the day his name.

The eternal lover that gave us the famous word 'Valentine' and originated the tradition of writing love letters on this day, is believed to be Bishop Valentine. He was a priest in Rome when, the city was ruled by 'Claudius the Cruel'. Inspite of the fact that Claudius had forbidden Christian conversions and Christian marriages, the Bishop refused to surrender to Roman Gods and carried on his religious duties in secret. He was imprisoned for disobedience, but even in prison he converted the convicts. While he was in prison, the jailer's daughter became his friend and was loyal to him through his ordeal. When Claudius came to know that imprisonment had not broken his enduring Christian spirit, the bishop was executed. Valentine Day Symbols

Roses

Demagnetization Analysis using Magnet Software

Permanent magnets are used in many electrical machines and motors including various BDC motors, synchronous motors, loudspeakers etc. When subjected to external magnetic fields and/or temperature changes, the magnetic properties of permanent magnets may change leading to demagnetization which may affect the performance of such machines. It is therefore very important to take this phenomenon into account when designing such machines.

MagNet's Demagnetization analysis features allow the user to study the demagnetization characteristics of machines containing permanent magnets. It includes three probes of this phenomenon: the Demagnetization field, which reports in the computational domain the demagnetization values(a default value of zero is reported in the case of materials for which demagnetization properties are not defined) for each material, the Demagnetization prediction field which is a binary field that allows the user to visually probe the regions of the model that are susceptible to demagnetization, and the Demagnetization proximity field which allows the user to get quantitative measures of the level of demagnetization in the model.

In the next few sections we demonstrate how demagnetization properties are set in MagNet and then apply this to a simple BDC motor. To illustrate this, consider an 8 pole 48 slot brushless DC motor with round stator type and a rotor of type IPM with variable orientation. Such motors are of interest in designing hybrid electric motor vehicles. The permanent magnets of this motor are made of Neodymium Iron Boron: 48/11 material. It is shown here on the figure above.

Results:

MagNet's material editor allows the user to define and set properties of new materials as well as modify that for materials from its extensive library. All standard properties including demagnetization values can be specified very easily using the materials editor. A sample of this is shown in this figure which shows the materials editor demagnetization properties window for Neodymium Iron Born: 48/11. It is noted that demagnetization values are set as a function of temperature. In the examples below, demagnetization prediction capabilities are demonstrated for temperature and geometrical properties variations.

To illustrate MagNet's demagnetization analysis capabilities we consider the motor introduced above and set it's temperature to 140 degrees. A static solve of the model is performed now and the demagnetization analysis fields are reported in an instant. First, the demagnetization field (defined above) is presented on the right. The permanent magnet materials for which demagnetization properties have been defined is clearly distinguished from the rest of the model in this figure.

The Demagnetization prediction field is presented next. Even at 140 degrees, it is noted that a very small section of the permanent magnet is susceptible to demagnetization (as should be the case for an industrial motor such as this).

The Demagnetization proximity field is presented next. From the definition of this field, the larger the values of this field (positive values being the threshold), the more susceptible the demagnetization will be and this is clearly verified in the results seen in the figure to the right.

MagNet's parameterization feature allows the user to compare geometrical and/or other variations of designs simultaneously. Consider varying the temperature for the motor considered here from 110 to 160 degrees. Clearly, within this range of temperatures, a variation in the demagnetization characteristics is expected.

Hybrid Stepper Motors

ABSTRACT

The hybrid step motor consists of two pieces of soft iron, as well as an axially magnetized, round permanent magnet rotor. The term hybrid is derived from the fact that the motor is operated under the combined principles of the permanent magnet and variable-reluctance stepper motors. The stator as well as the rotor consists of multiple toothed geometry. The highest performance and most expensive stepper motor is the hybrid stepper motor. Because of its combination of detent torque, efficiency and small step angles, it is the most commonly used form of the stepper motor. These motors see application in fine positioning applications such as precision scanning, diagnostic instrumentation, and laboratory automation systems.

Performance Prediction, Analysis & Enhancement Of Permanent Magnet Brushless DC Motors

ABSTRACT

The project includes performance prediction, performance analysis and performanceenhancement of all the three different types of Permanent Magnet Brushless DC (PM BLDC) motors namely; Surface Mounted PM BLDC, Interior PM BLDC and Inset PM BLDC motor through five different softwares (three different Finite Element softwares namely Ansys, MagNet and Maxwell, Speed software as well as Dadisp software). Briefly, this complete project can be viewed into two major sub parts, one being the performance prediction & the performance analysis and the other part being the performance enhancement of all these three above mentioned PM BLDC motors.

The performance prediction & performance analysis part includes determination of six different performance parameters namely cogging torque, excitation torque, torque ripple, flux linkage, self and mutual inductances and flux density at various motor parts like airgap, magnet, stator core, stator tooth and rotor core. The performance analysis also includes the harmonic analysis of all these motors using Dadisp software in order to predict the presence of harmonics in these motors. Moreover, in order to accurately analyze the motors several above mentioned softwares have been used. As any software considered may have its’ own constraints or limitations and so, if used for analysis it may yield to inaccurate results. So, in order to accurately determine the motor performance and yield reliable results, above mentioned softwares have been used which eliminates the dependency on a single software.

Second major part of the project is performance enhancement in which different techniques like introduction of the dummy slots, incrementing the area of the air-spacers by varying the rotor dimensions, magnet shaping, shifting the magnet pole-pair etc. have been implemented to enhance the motor performance. The performance is enhanced by reducing the cogging torque (peak to peak), reducing the torque ripple and by incrementing the developed torque. Thereby the modifications worth implementing in the geometries of all these three PM BLDC motors are suggested.

Three PM BLDC motors used here are 70 W, 350 rpm, 6 poles, 18 slots with a developed torque of 1.91 Nm. The developed torque obtained from MagNet, Ansys virtual work, Ansys maxwell stress tensor, Maxwell and Speed comes out to be 2.35 Nm, 2.14 Nm, 1.88 Nm, 2.36 Nm and 2.21 Nm respectively in case of Surface Mounted PM BLDC motor. For Interior PM BLDC motor, the values are 2.35 Nm, 2.47 Nm, 2.47 Nm and 2.68 Nm and for Inset PM BLDC motor, the values are 2.03 Nm, 2.17 Nm, 2.04 Nm and 2.14 Nm in case of MagNet, Ansys virtual work, Ansys maxwell stress tensor and Maxwell respectively. Also, in case of Interior PM BLDC motor, the performance is enhanced with an increment of 1.19 Nm in the developed torque along with upto 26.01% reduction in torque ripple and 0.2 Nm reduction in absolute value of cogging torque ripple where as for Inset PM BLDC motor, 12.49% torque ripple is reduced along with a minor reduction of 0.01 Nm in the absolute value of cogging torque ripple. Finally, for all the three motors the performance is enhanced, as the percentage torque ripple is achieved in the range of 30’s, so these motors will be very much useful in applications like: data storage devices, wind-shield wipers, fans, robotic arm control, etc.

PROJECT DEFINITON

The project includes the analysis carried out on three different types of Permanent Magnet Brushless Dc motors namely; Surface mounted PMBLDC, Interior PMBLDC and Inset PMBLDC motor through Speed software. The analysis includes the comparison of these three motors with respect to the common performance parameters as well as for each of these motors five different dimensional parameters namely; airgap length, magnet pole arc, magnet length, stator stack length and stator bore diameter are varied within a specific range practically feasible and its effect is observed on the variation of the performance parameters namely; torque ripple and efficiency. Thereby an effictive conclusion is derived at the end which deals with the optimization of the performance parameters of the given motor.
